- Cannabidiol (CBD), a primary compound in cannabis (or marijuana) is becoming a more commonly accepted tool in the arsenal against psychiatric and neurologic conditions – including PTSD, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders.Therapeutic uses for CBD in the treatment of these conditions and diseases is based on ongoing research of the human endocannabinoid system (ECS).
- The ECS can help modulate certain physiological processes such as mood, stress, sleep, and even pain sensation. The ECS communicates through compounds known as endocannabinoids. These messengers – or neurotransmitters – are produced naturally by the body. Though CBD is plant-based, it is chemically similar to endocannabinoids and therefore can interact with these receptors.
- The mechanism of CBD in the human body relies on two receptors – CB1 and CB2. A recent Case Report from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Fort Collins shows that “The CB1 receptors are located mainly in the brain and modulate neurotransmitter release in a manner that prevents excessive neuronal activity (thus calming and decreasing anxiety), as well as…regulates sensory perception” The study claims that “CBD has an indirect effect on the CB1 receptors by stopping the enzymatic breakdown of anandamide, allowing it to stay in the system longer and provide medical benefits.” CBD also has a mild effect on CB2 receptors by mediating the release of cytokines that helps to reduce inflammation and pain.
The report went on to study the effect of CBD on a young girl with PTSD and anxiety. The study ultimately revealed that CBD supplements at bedtime, and 6 mg to 12 mg of CBD sublingual spray during the day, resulted in a gradual increase in sleep quality and quantity and a decrease in anxiety. After 5 months, the patient was sleeping on her own with no side effects observed from taking the CBD oil. The main finding from the case study was that CBD oil can be an effective compound to reduce anxiety and insomnia secondary to PTSD.
A 2020, an article in the “Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association” reviewed literature on CBD and the endocannabinoid neuropharmacology system with the results touting “the proven and promising medical uses…for CBD” It concluded that CBD and CBD and THC combinations have potential “to provide safe, effective therapy for several psychiatric and neurologic conditions and diseases.”
